The definition of thriller/ sub genres/ Target Audience

The thriller genre is a very broad genre as it has many sub genres mixed into it, The thriller genre to me is made up of several ingredients and one of the most important is the suspence, which is  within any film which is classed as a thriller. All types of thriller films tend to get you to think the that the story is going to go one kind of way but towards the end there are usually twists that throws you off track and blows your perceptions out of propertion. Thrillers usually involve some type of crime or a type of criminal, for instance silence of the lambs is all about a serial killer and a detective using the help of a former criminal ( who is a cannibal) to catch the serial killer.

  Sub Genres

There are many sub genres within the thriller genre:
Action thrillers- These mainly involve alot of explosions and weapons and typical hero vs villain plot- Films that would fit in this genre would be:
Die Hard
Die hard 2
2 fast 2 furious
Transporter 2
Mission impossible 2

Pshycological thrillers- These Films usually involve the main villain toying around with the hero or heroine for example in disturbia the villain makes the hero look crazy as he keeps saying that his next door neighbour is a killer but nobody believes him- Films of this genre include:

The resident
Phone booth
Perfect stranger
Disturbia
The butterfly effect
Red dragon

Horror Thrillers- These are a darker kind of thriller and are alot more gory then a typical thriller per say, they deal with serial killer plots and are for the older type of audience rather then younger viewers. :

Underworld evolution - supernatural
Underworld- supernatural
Blade
Blade 2

Revenge thrillers- Revenge thrillers are usually about the protaganist acting against something which is wrong. Like in Law abiding citizen the protaganist starts to kill people in the government to prove that the justice system is wrong as they let a criminal who killed his family walk free.

 Law abiding citizen
 Taken

Supernatural thrillers- These deal with monsters and prophecies and a sort of twisted plot to prevent a certain monster killing everyone etc...

Dead again- supernatural
The others - supernatural
What lies beneath -

Sci-fi thrillers- These are the futuristic kind of thrillers... Which involve the hero/heroine having a kind of power and using it to prevent something from happening

Push – sci - fi
the one – sci/fi
The jackal- political
Next – sci-fi

Target audience of the thriller genre
The target audience for the thriller genre is as broad as the genre itself. Because it has many different sub genres and elements to it. so it has a different type of thriller to suit most people. The horror thrillers may suit the younger generation.. and the revenge/politcal  thrillers may interest the older  viewers and there are many different versions of a thriller that there is almost a type for most viewers.
